JAXHOST v2.0 (3/03/86)
In response to several callers to the Northern Lights BBS who have
beem looking for a simple package enabling file transfers between home
and office PC's (or portable to home base), I have written JAXHOST.
It IS simple, and when used with another package I wrote last summer,
XFER, it gets the job done. JAXHOST answers the call, requests entry
of a password, and if correct password supplied, drops the caller to
DOS through the CTTY command. Later, when the caller logs off, it
recycles and is ready for the next call. If the correct password is
not given within 3 tries, JAXHOST hangs up and recycles.
In addition to needing the XFER package (v1.21 is the current
version), you may wish to use the utility called WATCHDOG. It
monitors the Carrier Detect signal from the modem and reboots the
system in the event of disconnect or inadvertant hang-up when at the
DOS level. If WATCHDOG is not used the next caller to the system will
enter it at the DOS level.
File transfers from the DOS level using Xmodem or Xmodem/CRC may be
accomplished if the XFER package is installed. As of this writing,
the current version of XFER is v1.21. If not available from the BBS's
where you obtained this package, it may be downloaded by first-time
callers from my BBS (number at the end of this doc).
The caller logs off the system by typing "OFF". The system then
recycles to await the next call. In the event of a disconnect due to
line noise or other failure, the system will not recycle. If the
caller had been at the DOS level, anyone calling would enter the
system at the DOS level because the modem is left in the auto-answer
mode. To avoid such a danger, the package called WATCHDOG should be
installed to monitor the carrier and reboot the system upon carrier
loss. (WATCHDOG may be found on most BBS's)
JAXHOST is designed for use on the Hayes 1200 or close-compatible
modem. Recommended switch settings are: 1-up, 2-up, 3-down, 4-down,
5-down, 6-up, 7-up. 8-down.
The complete package consists of the following files:
JAXHOST.DOC - this file
JAXHOST.EXE - executable module
HOST.BAT - batch file which controls operations
OFF.BAT - batch file which ends the comm. session
JHCONFIG.TXT - configuration text file in which you specify
the comm port used and speed in bits/sec.
ANSR.TXT - text file containing the message displayed
to the caller.
PWRD.TXT - text file containing the password.
Install JAXHOST by transferring all files (doc excluded) to the same
disk/directory. Customize the 3 .TXT files with any editor as
necessary. To activate, turn on your modem and type HOST (or inlude
as the final command in your AUTOEXEC.BAT). To terminate JAXHOST
operations, type Q.
